I’m obviously a little biased, but the mattress buying decision is one of the more important decisions you can make for your health and overall well-being.  The economy has certainly been rough over the last several years and many people don’t have the means or desire to spend a whole bunch of money on a mattress.  I want to convince you, however, that you should be willing to spend extra money on a mattress.  There’s a couple of reasons why you should, and I believe doing so can have a very big positive impact on your life.

Better mattresses tend to last much longer than cheaper mattresses.  If you buy a cheap mattress, then you may only get a reasonable life of 4-5 years out of it.  If you step up and buy a better-quality mattress, you can get 12-15 good years out of it.  So, even though you may have saved money initially on a cheaper mattress, if you have to buy a new one 2-3 times as often, how much money are you really saving? If a good mattress can help you get rid of back pain and other health problems, then you are saving on a whole bunch of other costs as well.  The overall point is that even though you think you are saving money and avoiding an extra-expensive expenditure, you may actually be saving a whole lot less money than you think (or maybe you are even losing money in the long-run).

Spending money on a mattress

While there may not be much of a difference between a $50 and a $150 shirt, there can be HUGE differences in your life with a cheap mattress versus a better-quality one.  Getting a good mattress can mean you can get to sleep faster and you can sleep better throughout the night.  This means better overall sleep, which will put you in a better mood and help you think much more clearly.  It will decrease your overall stress and make you much healthier.  Furthermore, cheap mattresses can contribute to body pain.  If the bed is not properly supportive and/or comfortable, you can easily develop back, shoulder, and/or hip pain.  If it’s bad enough, you may end up needing to spend money on medical costs addressing the issue.  Having said this, you can always try to find a sale or get a discount online (example here).  But either way, don’t be afraid to spend a little bit more to get that extra quality mattress.

Those are the two main points of why you should be willing to step up and spend a little bit more money then you probably want to on a mattress.  It can have a significant impact on your life.
